Quartz watches or mechanical watches: Which is better?

The question of whether quartz watches or mechanical watches are better is one of the great classics in the world of fine timepieces. The answer is both sobering and interesting: it all depends on the angle of view.

Quartz watches: robust precision artists

Quartz watches are technically less complex and therefore more robust than mechanical ones. For this reason, they are known above all for their reliability. Quartz watches are generally less sensitive to shock. Because of their simplicity, quartz watches can manage with 30 to 50 individual parts per calibre. Quartz watches reached their historical peak between the 1960s and 1990s when Japanese quartz watches in particular almost replaced mechanical watches. Japanese quartz watches play a historically relevant role in the watchmaking world and are sometimes popular with advocates of mechanical watches.

Mechanical watches are complex works of art

Mechanical movements, however, are much more complex and historically relevant. They have been constructed according to the same basic principle for centuries; classical watchmaking can look back on an age-old tradition. The first wheel clocks were made in the 14th century, while the basic functioning of today's mechanical timepieces dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. Simple mechanical movements quickly add up to 200 individual parts, with the standard components: Winding shaft, mainspring barrel with spiral spring, escapement, balance wheel with hairspring. For automatic watches: Winding rotor.

Mechanical watches are all about tradition, craftsmanship and savoir-faire. When one considers the precise functioning of manual and automatic calibres, which make up the vast majority of mechanical timepieces, there is no doubt that mechanical watches are precision mechanical masterpieces. Mechanical watch design, manufacture and finishing require an enormous amount of know-how. This particularly true in the case of sophisticated timepieces, especially those of Haute Horlogerie. Even the development of new mechanical movements can take years and cost several million euros. In a mechanical timepiece, gears and springs do the work; the fact that such a watch, unlike a quartz watch, does not use any electricity at all is extremely charming and, especially in this day and age, a decelerating thought.
