The definition of collector's watches is as individual as tastes themselves. The most important thing to start when it comes to collectable watches is that there is no "right" or "wrong". Any model and any collection that appeals to an individual are allowed. Nevertheless, some recurring themes are particularly popular, and rightly so. They pick up on extremely sought-after collection fields or versatile models, for example:
- Certain themes or complications: Pilot's or diver's watches, dress watches, vintage watches, perpetual calendars or chronographs.
- Classics: For example, a collection consisting of Rolex Daytona, Patek Philippe Nautilus, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso.
- Model collections: Different variants of the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional or Breitling Navitimer.
- Something from everyone.
While collector's watches for experienced watch lovers are often high-end vintage models, Seiko and the Omega Speedmaster are areas that are also suitable for beginners with a smaller budget.
By far the largest area of collector's watches is at Rolex. The Geneva-based manufacturer has been producing reliable timepieces for luxury lovers and professionals for over a century. Today, there is hardly a Rolex model that has not achieved legendary status. Even the smallest details that are not even noticeable to the untrained eye can turn a watch into an extremely sought-after collector's item such as:
- Patrizzi Dial, Inverted Six Dial or Porcelain Dial of the Rolex Daytona.
- Stella Dial of the Rolex Day-Date.
- Tropical and Spider Dials on various models.
- Flat-4-Bezel of the Rolex Submariner Kermit.
The Rolex variety ranges from new watches to vintage timepieces with four to eight-figure prices. Three-hand watches or models with complex annual calendars as well as GMT functions are also sought after.
As far as Omega collectors' watches are concerned, the Omega Speedmaster, which has been produced since 1957, is one of the most sought-after and diverse watches from the manufacturer. Considering the history and status of this model, prices for the Moonwatch are still decidedly fair. This applies both to the less expensive watches such as the Speedmaster Automatic Triple Date and also to rare and particularly collectable references such as the Ref. 105.003 (White Ed).
In addition to the Speedmaster, the Seamaster Diver 300M is also gradually gaining collector status. The first reference of this model, produced from 1993 to 2006, has passed through the price valley. The successor references to this original Ref. 2551.80.00 are likely to follow suit in the medium term.
