The Green Evolution: A Look at Rolex’s Iconic Submariners

Lena Krüger

In the world of luxury timepieces, where precision, craftsmanship, and innovation converge, few names command the same reverence and admiration as Rolex. This legendary Swiss watchmaker has produced some of the most iconic and sought-after watches in history. Among their illustrious lineup, one particular trend has captured the imagination of watch enthusiasts worldwide – the emergence of green Submariners.

The Kermit: A Green Revolution

The journey of green Submariners begins with the Rolex Submariner 16610LV, affectionately known as the “Kermit.” Introduced in 2003, the Kermit marked a significant departure from the traditional black-bezel Submariners. Its vibrant green bezel, in line with Rolex’s branding colors, was a clear statement of intent.

A 50th Anniversary Marvel

The Kermit was not just another addition; it was the 50th-anniversary model, making it a milestone in Rolex’s history. This model signaled a shift with several subtle changes, such as the absence of drilled lug holes and the introduction of the maxi dial, setting the stage for future innovations.

The Shades of Kermit

Over its seven-year production run, the Kermit exhibited variations in its green hue. Some were olive-tones, while others leaned towards brighter or darker shades. Another distinct feature was the transition from the flat four to the pointed 4 on the dial, reflecting Rolex’s commitment to refinement.

The Hulk: A Game-Changer

Seven years after the Kermit’s debut, Rolex introduced the Submariner “Hulk”. This watch marked several firsts in the Submariner lineup, creating waves in the watch world.

A Splash of Green

The Hulk was the first regular production steel Submariner to feature a colored bezel, signifying a shift towards bolder designs. It also introduced the concept of colored dials to stainless steel Submariners, with its striking green sunburst dial.

The Maxi Case Evolution

The Hulk’s introduction coincided with the introduction of the six-digit reference and the maxi case, giving the watch a more robust profile compared to its predecessor, the Kermit. This change in design solidified its nickname, the “Hulk.”

The Starbucks: A Modern Twist

In 2020, Rolex unveiled the reference 126610LV, which some enthusiasts affectionately call the “Cermit” due to its ceramic bezel and Kermit-inspired design elements.

Back to Black

Unlike the Hulk, the Cermit – also known as the Starbucks – brings back the black dial, reminiscent of the original Kermit. It retains the caliber 3235 movement, glide lock, and slimmed-down lugs, paying homage to the classic Submariner lineage.

Uncertain Future

The longevity of the Starbuck’s production remains uncertain, typical of Rolex’s enigmatic approach. Collectors covet all three green Submariners for their rarity and unique design, making them highly sought-after timepieces.

The Green Evolution

The evolution of green Submariners within Rolex’s portfolio showcases the brand’s commitment to innovation and design. From the iconic Kermit to the game-changing Hulk and the modern Starbucks, each model had left an indelible mark on the world of luxury watches.

For those with a passion for horology, these green Submariners represent not only a timekeeping device but also a piece of Rolex’s rich heritage and enduring legacy.
