The upcoming months are perhaps the most exciting in the world of luxury watches. With SIHH having come to a close and Baselworld 2018 just on the horizon, the watch world is buzzing with anticipation regarding potential upcoming releases. Today, we bring you news from a name that goes hand-in-hand with precision, first-class performance, aviation, and much more – Breitling’s new Navitimer 8 collection.
There are officially only 52 days left until Baselworld 2018 and we here at CHRONEXT are eagerly anticipating meeting with renowned brands and trying on, first-hand, the new releases of the year. We’ve had an inkling that Breitling just might be announcing some big news earlier this month thanks to a series of illuminative Instagram posts. On January 13th, 2018, the brand hinted at the start of a legendary future followed by a series of posts alluding to the release of a new Navitimer. The Breitling Navitimer 8 is the first collection to be manufactured under the reign of new CEO Georges Kern. The models nod to vintage Breitling chronographs and the deep connection of the brand with the world of aeronautics and aviation.
The history of Breitling, aviation, and chronographs
Breitling has had a long history of robust, precise, and quality timepieces. Evidently, the company has always aligned itself very closely with the world of aviation as can be witnessed by the winged-B logo of the brand on vintage models. In fact, the company was founded not too long after the first successful flight in world history in 1884. Since then, Breitling has specialised in the precise measurement of time and speed, going on to introduce the first watch with independent chronograph pushers.
The Navitimer – Then and now
The Breitling Navitimer is a world classic from the independent Swiss watchmaking brand. First introduced in 1952, the model became highly popular among aeronautic professionals thanks to its innovative slide rule function, exquisite precision, and robust form. Historically, the Navitimer is characterised by a dark watch face and chronograph display. Highlights of the Navitimer include being the official timepiece of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and appearing on the wrist on James Bond in the 1965 film Thunderball.
The Navitimer 8 – Here’s what we know so far
On January 18, 2018, Breitling showcased the very first appearance of the Navitimer 8 on the company’s official Instagram page. The leading piece of info revealed by the brand was the connection of the Navitimer 8 to Huit Aviation, which was founded in the 1930s as a specialised department to manufacture onboard chronographs for aviators.
The Breitling Navitimer 8 collection consists of 5 Watches
1. Breitling Navitimer B01
The Flagship model is the Breitling Navitimer B01. The timepiece is comprised of a reverse panda dial and coin-edge bezel. It measures a bold 43 mm in diameter and 14.5 mm in height and is powered by the in-house produced Automatic calibre B01.
2. Breitling Navitimer 8 Chronograph
The Breitling Navitimer 8 Chronograph differs from the rest of the collection due it’s Eta-Valijoux 7750 based movement and subdials placed on the 6, 9, and 12 o’clock positions. The Breitling Navitimer 8 Chronograph is available in 4 variants including a black or blue dial as well as a DLC-coated case.
3. Breitling Navitimer 8 Unitime
The Breitling Navitimer 8 Unitime, as made evident by the name, features a unitime complication. The movement is based on the calibre B35 (in-house manufactured movement), features a silver or black dial, and has a 70 hour power reserve.
4. The Breitling Navitimer 8 Automatic
The Breitling Navitimer 8 Automatic (Eta-based movement) is a smaller, simpler iteration of the collection. The timepiece measures 41 mm in diameter and 10.7 mm in height. It stays true to the general aesthetic of the collection and, like the Breitling Navitimer 8 Chronograph, is available in a sleek DLC coated version.
5. The Breitling Navitimer 8 Day & Date
Last but not least, the Breitling Navitimer 8 Day & Date is available with a black or blue dial and stainless steel or leather straps. The model features a day indicator at the 12 o’clock position as well as a date indicator at 6 o’clock. As with the remainder of the collection, the timepiece is water resistant to 100 meters and features an Eta-movement.
