The Panerai Luminor GMT: A tried and tested classic gets a face lift

In keeping with the modern world's global outlook, the well known Italian watchmakers Officine Panerai have decided to expand the functionality of their best selling Panerai Luminor with a GMT feature. From now on it's able to display an additional time zone, which is especially helpful for business trips and vacations abroad. Even as you jet around the world, you'll always know what time it is at home.

The new Panerai Luminor GMT also benefits from a revised dial and hand design which refreshes the look of this perennial favourite. What hasn't changed, though, is the large format of the watch. This was first introduced with the classic Panerai Luminor Base, which was a surprise success in the 1990s and has maintained its cult status to this day. It's the basis of all other Luminor models.

The dial of Panerai Luminor GMT watches has been redesigned to feel more contemporary, for example with wider and chunkier hands. Along with the big Arabic numerals and minute markers, they're fluorescent for easy legibility in dim lighting conditions.

This is achieved using Luminor, a patented compound that is one of Panerai's greatest accomplishments. For a long time, diving watches designed with Luminor were produced exclusively for the Italian Navy. The company continually refined its technology to meet the special requirements of combat divers. The crown protection bridge, water resistance up to 300 metres, robust lugs – these innovations have all become key features of Panerai Luminor GMT watches and other entries in the Luminor range.

The Panerai Luminor GMT

A practical everyday companion

The Luminor GMT improves on its predecessors by offering a second time zone display. Panerai made this update in response to growing demand from its customers, who were looking for a practical companion for stays in different parts of the world, one which would allow them to easily keep track of the time at home.

The manufacturer complied with this request and at the same time modernized the design of the dial and hands. The time zone sub-dial is at 9 O'clock on all models, while the date display (which can be under a magnifying lens depending on the exact variant) is located discreetly at 3 o'clock. All Panerai Luminor GMT models use an exclusive movement with a power reserve of 42 hours, and they're available in two diameters: 40 mm or 44 mm. There's also a variant called the Luminor GMT Power Reserve, which has a power reserve indicator at 5 O'clock.

The dial is protected by non-reflective sapphire crystal measuring between 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm in thickness. A screwed base and crown protection bridge with locking lever are also an integral part of the high-performing design. Like all Luminor models, the watches in the Luminor GMT collection are water resistant to 300 metres.

The standard strap for this watch comes in high quality leather in a choice of colours, finished off with a folding clasp. Alternatively, you can customise your order with a bracelet made of steel or a combination of steel and titanium.
