Panerai 1950

Luminor in Heritage Design

The Panerai Luminor 1950 is a special case design from the Luminor collection, which differs from the conventional series in the following ways:

  • Rounded lines (U-shape)
  • Thicker horns
  • Domed glass
  • Inscribed crown protector
  • No screwed spring bars (but a quick-change system)

The first model in the Panerai 1950 Luminor collection was the PAM 127 ("Fiddy"), which was presented in 2002. Since then, the Panerai 1950 Luminor has been one of the most sought-after collections because of its extraordinary beauty of form. In addition, the model picks up on the brand's historical design. The 1950 models' diameter is typically Panerai- large and usually 42, 44 or 47 millimetres.

The variety of models

The PAM 127, with which Panerai first appeared in 1950, remains an icon of the Milanese luxury manufacturer to this day. Since Panerai is known for its impressive variety of models, there are several references for almost every taste, which differ in the materials used, colouring and complications. In addition to various 1950 Flyback Chronographs (such as the PAM 524, PAM 580, PAM 653), some 1950 GMT references are also available - for example PAM 233, PAM 335, PAM 535. The Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 also offers a watch for professional divers, which features a rotating bezel and a regular diving depth of 300 metres.

Popular models

  • PAM 524 (44 mm, flyback chronograph with date)
  • PAM 372 (47 mm, "Fiddy", original model of the Panerai 1950 collection)
  • PAM 233 (44 mm, 8-day movement with power reserve indicator, GMT function and date)
  • PAM 351 (44 mm, titanium case with date)

Military watches for enthusiasts

Officine Panerai was founded in Milan in 1860 and initially developed patents in the watch and optics sector until the Italian Navy commissioned the family-owned company in 1938 to develop maritime timepieces for military use. Panerai then purchased Rolex movements and produced its inhouse dials, which had radium luminous material - this is where the collection name "Radiomir" comes from.

In 1950, Panerai introduced the non-radioactive luminous substance Luminova, which was henceforth used in the new "Luminor" models. After the case design had been modified slightly over the decades, Panerai returned to the roots of the original Panerai 1950 case design in 2002 with the launch of the PAM 172 ("Fiddy").

The conventional Luminor case is often dated back to 1997: It was only in that year that Panerai opened up to the civilian market with three limited-edition models. Before that, the manufacturer exclusively supplied the Italian Navy and was subject to the strictest military secrecy. This is one of the reasons why vintage Panerai 1950 models are extremely sought-after today.
