Seamaster Planet Ocean: The maritime heritage of Omega

The reference is the best from Omega so far when it comes to divers' watches: the Planet Ocean. Ref. is the 43.5 mm model with three hands and date, stainless steel bracelet, black dial and orange accents. The Planet Ocean collection was launched in 2005 and is based on Omega's maritime heritage, which has been one of the core competences of the Swiss manufacturer for decades.

The meaning of Ref.

The reference is based on the so-called PIC-14 system (scheme: AAA.BB.CC.DD.EE.FFF) and has the following meaning:

  • 215: The Collection code (210 = Planet Ocean)
  • 30: Material used to make the case and strap (32 = stainless steel/stainless steel)
  • 44: Diameter of the watch (= 43.5 millimetres, rounded up)
  • 21: Calibres and complications (= OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 8900)
  • 01: Colour of the dial and if applicable stone setting (= black)
  • 001: The Model's -specific code

Suitable for deep sea diving

The Ref. is a watch for professional and recreational divers. While the Omega Seamaster already meets the requirements for professional diving, Omega has adapted the features of the Planet Ocean even more to the needs and requirements of professional divers. Specifically, the Ref. has the following attributes:

  • Waterproof up to 600 meters
  • Helium escape valve to allow helium molecules to escape during saturation diving and decompression phases, thus preventing damage to the watch
  • Extendable folding clasp to quickly adapt the watch to the diving suit
  • Ceramic bezel with diving scale made of Omega's Omega's proprietary Liquidmetal material

Tradition meets modernity

With the Ref., Omega combines traditional watchmaking with the latest technology. The development, manufacture and design of Omega Planet Ocean benefit from the 170 years of experience of the Biel-based manufacturer. However, Omega is breaking new ground in manufacturing, which has always been based on classic watchmaking principles. The company is continually developing new materials, such as the alloy Liquidmetal, which is three times harder than stainless steel after cooling.

The movement of the Ref., the Omega Master Chronometer 8900, also combines tradition with modernity: while the production of a manufacture calibre cannot do without the classic manufacturing techniques, the calibre features the Co-Axial escapement used exclusively by Omega, as well as particularly amagnetic materials, which are the only ones that make the demanding METAS certification – which requires a magnetic field resistance of 15,000 Gauss possible in the first place.
