The Santos is not only one of the world's first wristwatches, but also the very first pilot's watch. When the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont made his first flight attempts at the beginning of the 20th century, he noticed how difficult it was to read the time on his pocket watch. His friend Louis Cartier had a groundbreaking solution to this problem. With the Santos, he created one of the very first watches that could be worn on the wrist with a bracelet. In 1906, Santos-Dumont completed a 220-metre flight; he probably wore one of the first watches on his wrist.
