How the men’s watch became ubiquitous

Since prehistoric times, man has attempted through the science of astronomy – the tracking of the sun, moon, and stars – to determine and forecast the vagaries of the weather, the change of seasons, and something as fundamental as the time of day. The exact date of when the first mechanical watches came into use is unclear, but the first known mentions of the term were in the year 1269.

It is speculated, that the first mechanical clock was created as far back as the High Middles Ages. Thenceforth, the technology of the mechanical watch underwent continuous advancements. Through miniaturisation of those mechanical clocks, they eventually evolved into pocket watches, becoming a stylish part of the contemporary dress.

With the start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th Century, the mass production of watches commenced, further advancing the technology used in those instruments. At that time in history, the most important hubs of watch craftsmanship were, as today, in France, Germany, Switzerland, and England. In the 19th Century the first wristwatches were being worn by women, only later did men start utilising the convenience of such versatile a tool.

From the simple three hand watch to the tourbillon: The gentlemen’s watch and its functions

In the modern age, watches have become an essential part of daily life for innumerable people. More than simple tools to tell the time, watches are an extension of the woman and man who wears them. In addition to telling the time, watches may also function as alarm clocks, astronomical clocks, navigational devices, amongst many other professional instruments. Even diver’s and pilot’s watches are fundamentally men’s watches that are specialised tools created specifically for certain environments and jobs. As such, these showcase excellent functionality and durability.

The primary function of watches has always been to tell the time. Beyond this, many watches also have date functions that display the day of the month, or the month of the year, or even the day. Amongst the more popular watches are those with a stopwatch functions. These are called chronographs. Any function that goes beyond that of simply telling the time is called a complication. Exceptionally complicated watches are highly regarded amongst watch in the watch industry.

These complications can be very useful in certain circumstances. A few examples are the depth gauge for divers, the slide rule for pilots, or the world time function for globetrotters. These are only a few of the many of complications that watchmakers have developed throughout the history of horology.
