Why investing in an Omega Seamaster is worthwhile

Nils Rau

The Omega Seamaster collection is one of the best-known series from the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer. Whether Seamaster as a three hand watch or a chronograph, Planet Ocean, Quartz model or Limited Edition: the quality of workmanship and reliability are beyond all doubt. But do the Seamaster models fare well when it comes to value retention?

Omega Seamaster: In business since 1948

The first Seamaster was launched in 1948 and water-resistant to 60 metres - a masterpiece for its time. The look of these Seamasters is not reminiscent of today's typical Seamaster. Rather, it was a classic dress watch with Dauphine hands and a leather strap.

It was not until the introduction of the Seamaster 300 in 1957 that the Seamaster collection received its first “full-blooded” toolwatch. With a diving bezel and a water resistance of up to 300 meters, the watch - designed for professional and amateur divers - was also suitable for professional dives. Another milestone dates back to 1970, when the Omega Seamaster Ploprof (diving depth: 600 metres) was launched.

Only in 1993, was the Seamaster finally given the appearance that we all know of today. The Seamaster Diver Professional was introduced with the characteristic wave blade and the typical skeleton hands. 25 years later, Baselworld 2018 was when the Seamaster Diver Professional received its latest facelift. In addition to the classic Seamaster, two other models in the Seamaster portfolio play an important role today: the Planet Ocean, which is waterproof to 600 metres, and the elegant Aqua Terra.

A positive price development

A quick look at our figures confirms it: Between 2016 and 2018, the price of the Omega Seamaster rose slightly. While the average selling price at CHRONEXT in 2016 was approximately 2300 euros, this year it has been between 2600 and 2700 euros so far. This is an increase of about 15% in less than two years. The relative increase is impressive, but compared to other luxury watches, the price of the watch is (still) manageable.

Of course, there are watches that promise a greater increase in value, but ultimately the Omega Seamaster is not a classic "investment watch". Omega does not cut back on its models, so availability is correspondingly good. Taking all this information into consideration, the performance of the Seamaster can be rated as very good.

There are many reasons for the price increase. On the one hand, there is only one price direction in the luxury goods industries such as the watch industry - upwards. Omega also increases its prices from time to time, so that the general price level, as with all watch manufacturers, is constantly rising. On the other hand, the Omega Seamaster continues to enjoy great popularity. The watch is a reliable all-rounder and every time a new Seamaster model is launched, sales figures increase. Some watch lovers quickly buy the old model, whilst some are happy about the new release and strike at them directly.

Price developments in the coming years

When you buy a luxury watch, the subject of investment or value retention does not necessarily play a vital role. Nevertheless, it can only be a positive thing if an expensive watch retains its value. No matter how unimportant a luxury item may be, the certainty that the money invested is not lost is definitely reassuring.

Of course, the performance of the Omega Seamaster cannot be predicted. If you look into the past and observe the current development of the watch industry, it is likely that the price will continue to rise in the future. But a probability is and remains only a prognosis. However, the quality and appreciation of the Omega brand must also be taken into account. The Swiss manufacturer is one of the best-known and most sought-after watch brands in the world. In addition, the Seamaster models in particular are timeless and durable due to their inner and outer values. The outstanding workmanship and the reliability of the movements guarantee a practically eternal durability and the elegant and sporty look make the Seamaster a perfect companion in all situations of life - no matter if you are wearing fine threads or are on the way to the beach in your swimming trunks. The movements with Co-Axial escapement and METAS certification also meet the highest demands in watchmaking artistry.

Omega Seamaster: The investment pays off

You can’t go wrong with an Omega. Not only do the watches have excellent workmanship and are equipped with innovative and sophisticated movements - in view of the relatively low price, the result is a watch that is unparalleled in its price class. On top of that, the price level remains stable. If you buy a new Seamaster, you will only have to make very small deductions if you want to sell the model as a used watch. An increase in value can already be expected in the medium term. This aspect is especially interesting if you want to invest a manageable amount of money in a timepiece.
