We’ve already presented you with some of our top highlights from Baselworld 2017 in Part I of our review of the watch and jewellery show. Now we are excited to present you with Part II of our review, where we delve deeper into 2017 novelties from Rolex, Breitling, and Tudor.
A majority of the watch loving community seemed to focus their excitement around the 50th anniversary Rolex Sea-Dweller “Single Red” when it came to Rolex novelties at this year’s watch and jewellery show. While this watch is an extremely impressive masterpiece, Rolex also announced the release of many more notable novelties, including the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Sweller Reference 326934, which combines the timeless aesthetic of Rolex models with technological innovations.
Like all new Rolex models, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller has undergone rigorous testing and exceeded specific standards set by Rolex to receive the Superlative Chronometer certification, meaning that it comes equipped with 5 years of warranty. With 11 patents, this timepiece is a watch for world travellers, featuring revolutionary designs to help keep track of no matter the geographical location. The dial of the watch features a dual time zone, with the centre hands indicating the local time as well as an off-center sub-dial with a 24-hour format. At the very top of the subdial rests a fixed inverted red triangle, which indicates the reference time. The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller also features an annual calendar that requires one date adjustment per year, when the month changes from February to March.
But the impressive features of this watch also extend to its outward aesthetic. The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is comprised of Rolesor, which is the combination of gold and steel. Furthermore, the watch measures a bold 42 mm in diameter and sits confidently on the wrist. The model is available in white, blue, black, yellow gold, and rose gold.
Tudor presented us with an exquisite and versatile novelty first-hand at this year’s Baselworld – the Heritage Black Bay 41. Many watch fans have speculated that this novelty is a simple reiteration of the Heritage Black Bay 36 that was presented last year, however, many well-thought out changes have been made to this model, allowing it to be worn not only during adventures and dives but also during countless other occasions – both formal and casual.
Evidently, the Heritage Black Bay 41 is now available in 41mm, allowing it to pose a bolder aesthetic on the wrist. The timepiece also features a redesigned slimmed down middle case, enabling it to fit perfectly under the cuff of a shirt, as well as a fixed bezel in stainless steel. As stated by Tudor, the Heritage Black Bay 41 “captures the essence of the Black Bay in a formal version.”
Quite importantly, however, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay 41, of course, pays tribute to the Black Bay family, with a traditional dial and trademark “snowflake” hand. The model also features a large winding crown with the Tudor rose logo as well as a black anodised aluminium winding crown tube.
The novelty is also paired with a steel bracelet or aged leather strap. Each variant also comes equipped with an additional camouflage fabric strap, which is included in the box.
A timepiece that really caught our attention at this year's Baselworld was the robust Breitling Avenger Hurricane Military. Aside from a massive silhouette that measures 50 mm in diameter, the colour scheme and bold aesthetics of the watch make it hard to miss. The daring black dial of the watch is complemented with luminescent hands and indices that feature a patinated yellow tone – paying tribute to the tool watches that were manufactured by the brand from the 1940s to the 1960s.
The Avenger Hurricane Military is comprised of Breitlight, which is a high-tech and extremely robust material that is 3.3 times lighter than titanium and 5.8 times lighter than steel. In addition to advanced scratch and corrosion resistance, Breitlight is composed of antimagnetic properties, ensuring the timepiece can endure in any situation.
The impressive Breitling Avenger Hurricane Military is powered by the in-house produced Calibre B12, which is, of course, COSC Certified. The timepiece is paired with a khaki military textile strap with black rubber lining. This incredible Baselworld 2017 novelty is limited to 1,000 pieces.
