Universally revered, eternally timeless
An ode to the absence of light
The PVD and DLC processes have perfected the method of turning watches to black. It is a combination of artisanship and modern alchemy that transforms the common into the exclusive, bestowing an air of flair, elegance, and bravado.
Coating luxury watches with PVD or DLC not only offers a novel look, but also allows for the individualisation of any watch model from a variety luxury brands. Classic watches, with world famous designs, may be transformed to create one-of-a-kind and personalised models. A modification – a transmutation even – of a standard model into something wholly unique. These watches are the answer for watch enthusiasts who are looking for the extraordinary. All-black wristwatches have conquered the market and the hearts of many. They are understated and can easily be matched with a suit or casual jeans. Militaries see the value in DLC and PVD watches, too, as these can be coated to be non-reflective, thus providing stealth where necessary. It is no wonder that brands like IWC, Porsche Design, or Bell & Ross have decided to add black watches to their collections.
Here at CHRONEXT, not only can you buy modified watches, but can also have models PVD or DLC coated in our workshop. You can find more information on our services here.
Where luxury watches are reborn
Ember, Bamford Department, and Heritage Blaken
“At a time which makes everything personal and unique, your watch should be too.” – Hendrick Jürgens, Founder and Managing Director of Blaken.
/ Personalised, PVD-coated, or DLC-coated models are so popular that there are now several companies that specialise in providing watch modification services. For example, the German company Ember Watches, headquartered in Oberhaching in Bavaria for over 10 years now, has met the individual needs of style-conscious individuals. Amongst their famous clientèle is Mario Götze, the German international football player. In addition to their customised Rolex and Audemars Piguet models, Ember also offers DLC-coated watches. The blackened Ember versions of the Rolex Daytona and the Rolex Explorerpresent excellent designs and quality, and have become classics amongst luxury watches.
/ The founder of Blaken, Hendrik Jürgens, also recognised the potential of personalised wristwatches at exactly the right time. Whilst attending elegant dinners and soirées, the astute entrepreneur recognised that virtually everything, from ties to cutlery – even champagne – was personalised and individual to the owner, except for their watches. And so Blaken was conceived. Two years of work, prototyping, testing, and the evaluation of technological research that finally lead to Blaken’s success coalesce in each and every one of the watches they customise. Blaken revives rare vintage models and gives well-known models a fresh new look through their DLC process. Such models as the Rolex Explorer or the GMT-Master II receive spectacular new designs with a very special touch.
/ Bamford Watch Department is synonymous with superlative style and exclusivity. They were one of the first companies to offer the personalisation of luxury steel sport watches. Founded in 2003, the Bamford Watch Department specialises in the customisation of many iconic sports models made by the world's leading brands, such as Rolex and Tudor. Driven by passion, technical expertise and innovation with the aim to offer the highest quality customisation there is, Bamford finds inspiration in the wishes of their customers.
The DLC process: A symbiosis of sophisticated technology and aesthetic design
DLC an the acronym for "diamond-like carbon". It is a multi-level and patented high-tech process that coats the surface of an object with diamond-like carbon in order to produce an incomparably hard surface and unique appearance. Yet, at the same time, this DLC layer is more than ten times harder than conventional steel. It provides the watch with incredible scratch-resistance, as well as protection from corrosion. These models are biocompatible, too, meaning that they do not contain any allergens that could irritate the skin. Furthermore, the coating shields against damage that could be caused by chemicals, protecting against such things as nickel elements which are found in steel.
Whether finished with a glossy polish, a midnight black or an anthracite coating, these stylish and unique models are reliable tools when diving, sailing, mountain climbing – even in the boardroom! When you wear a DLC-coated watch, you wear a watch that is modern and radiates style.
DLC-coated watches are particularly well known for their resilience. Certainly we also offer this modification service here in our workshop. If you would like to have your watch DLC or PVD coated, you can find more information here.
Creating a distinct and casual design and making your watch indestructible
Explaining the PVD process
PVD is the acronym for “physical vapour deposit”. It describes a physical coating process that turns a gas into a solid state as a layer on the surface to be coated. The vapour of titanium, chrome, or aluminium for example, is deposited as a solid material on the object to be coated. The vapour condenses as an incredibly thin but extremely adherent alloy coating. This process is carried out in a pressure chamber with a vacuum that is comparable to that in space, at temperatures of 150°C - 500°C. This process is 100% environmentally friendly, as there are no pollutants or hazardous substances produced as by-products. PVD is safe, clean, and harmless. It is possible to apply a single or multi-layer coating in one step of the as well. Each coating is only 0.8 - 1 micrometres thick.
In addition to a black coating, the PVD coatings can range in colour from copper to a hue of chocolate brown. An important advantage of PVD coatings is their incredible hardness. Especially a PVD-layer of titanium, at 500 - 600 HV (Vickers Pyramid Number), has a hardness close to that of sapphire, which is only surpassed by that of diamonds. The alloy coating feels warmer to the touch and adds an additional layer of long-lasting protection against abrasion, scratches, and dents. They are notably resistant to corrosion and climatic influences, perspiration, as well as salt water.
