With Switzerland being home to numerous renowned manufacturers, it makes sense that Baselworld – one of the leading luxury watch trade fairs worldwide – is held in none other than Basel. The international watch and jewellery trade fair welcome watch collectors & enthusiasts from around the globe each spring to discover the anticipated novelties from popular and established brands such as Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer, in addition to new masterpieces from independent watchmakers such as MB&F, Richard Mille, and more. In total, the show hosts 1,500 exhibitors from over 100 countries.
Interestingly, Baselworld is celebrating its centennial birthday this year! The popular fair was first launched in 1917 as part of the Basel exhibition and only received its own pavilion in the 1930s, as the interest for luxury mechanical watches began to increase in popularity during that time. Not surprisingly, the fair continues to grow in esteem on a yearly basis. Last year alone, the fair hosted over 145,000 participants, including exhibitors, buyers, and visitors and press representatives from over 70 countries visited the fair.
Each year Baselworld is inaugurated by a member of the Swiss Federal Council. 2017 is no different and we can expect to see Federal Councillor Alain Berset officially open Baselworld on Thursday, March 23, 2017. Luckily, for those individuals who are unable to attend the fair this year, a live stream will be available on the Baselworld website for all to witness. The live stream will begin at 11 am (CET) on March 22nd. Furthermore, you can find a vast array of up-to-date content as soon as the fair opens its doors on CXT Magazine as well as our social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Baselworld has been known for its keen insight regarding trends in the luxury watch industry. This year, Baselworld has adapted to meet the increased demand for independent watchmaking brands. Thus, a new area called “Les Ateliers” will showcase more independent watchmaking brands than ever before.
Each year, the watch loving community is eager to discover the novelties that await them at Baselworld. Luxury watch brands, on the other hand, continue to tease their fans by releasing images or videos containing subtle hints as of what’s to come via their marketing and social media channels. So far, we know that we can expect novelties from the Baselworld exhibitors including Rolex, Breitling, Omega, and many more renowned brands.
This year, we are certain that Rolex just might be launching a new GMT-Master II “Coca Cola”. The history of the classic GMT Master dates back to 1954 when Rolex developed the dual time zone tool watch in collaboration with the American Airline Pan-Am. Not surprisingly, the general aesthetic of this timeless watch has remained more or less the same since then.
This year, it is rumoured that Rolex will introduce the Black & Red Rolex GMT Master with a ceramic bezel and stainless steel case. We are excited to finally witness this timeless tool watch in robust and resilient materials.
The Colt Skyracer is a watch that we are eager to see at this year’s Baselworld. The model is perfectly reminiscent of the original Colt Military. Interestingly, the Colt Skyracer comes equipped with a Breitling carbon material case, which is 5.8 times lighter than stainless steel and 3.3 times lighter than titanium. The Ultra durable timepiece is water resistant up to 100 meters and is shock resistant as well as scratch proof. We cannot wait to see how this timepiece feels on the wrist.
Even though Baselworld has not yet officially begun, Omega has already announced the official release of the Omega Speedmaster Automatic Racing Dial and we are more than eager to take a look at it first-hand at this year’s fair. The timepiece will feature a racing dial, which was first equipped to the Speedmaster in 1967 prior to the first moon landing. The model features a Co-Axial Master Chronometer (calibre 9900) movement with a sleek case that measures 44.25 mm in height. We are very eager to try this model on for size and discover what more Omega has in store for 2017.
While we may not know the precise models that await at this year’s Baselworld, we can anticipate the watch trends that we can expect to see for 2017. We are certain that Baselworld 2017 will feature some of the best trends that have been brewing for men’s and women’s watches over the past couple of years. Among them, we can already anticipate aesthetics leaning in the direction of minimalism, as well as timepieces composed of classic materials, and of course, and increasing affinity to the world of smart watches.
We will be covering Baselworld and provide live updates as we discover the novelties of 2017, so make sure to keep checking our Magazine and social media channels for more!
